Crypto Heist: Scammers Swipe $3 Million on Christmas Day in MS Drainer Scheme

Phishing Sites Exploiting Wallet Drainers Persist in Targeting Unwary Cryptocurrency Users.

In a span of 24 hours, scammers managed to pilfer $3 million worth of cryptocurrencies, employing Google Ads to promote deceptive websites equipped with wallet-draining software. Cointelegraph's report on December 21 highlighted scammers utilizing MS Drainer to abscond with $59 million in cryptocurrency during 2023.

According to Scam Sniffer, the malefactors leveraged Google Ads to deceive cryptocurrency users into accessing counterfeit versions of Web3 platforms like Zapper, Lido, Stargate, DefiLlama, Orbiter Finance, and Radient. The security firm detected recent incidents involving phishing sites associated with the same attackers' addresses, adding them to their scam database on December 25.

On Christmas Day, Scam Sniffer verified to Cointelegraph that approximately $3 million fell victim to phishing scams. The company shared screenshots indicating that a combination of WBTC, aPolUSDT, aUSDC, and USDT was taken in distinct incidents.

A representative from the company mentioned that in April 2023, Google Ads security was alerted regarding the continual promotion of fraudulent websites and the deployment of wallet-draining software. Regrettably, Scam Sniffer has not received a response from the platform as of now.

The recent phishing incidents serve as a crucial reminder for cryptocurrency users to exercise caution by thoroughly verifying the legitimacy of websites and transactions authorized through their Web3 wallets.

"Phishing scams currently pose the highest threat to users. To steer clear of them, users must diligently verify each signature request," emphasized a spokesperson from Scam Sniffer. In its recent report on wallet drainers, Scam Sniffer uncovered 10,072 fraudulent sites utilizing MS Drainer throughout 2023.

The software has been responsible for pilfering $58.98 million in crypto from more than 63,000 victims, as reported by a Dune Analytics dashboard established to monitor such activities.
